What? You've Never Heard of the Mangalitsa Hog?

Updated: Oct 26, 2023

Don't feel bad-neither had I.

Unless you knew to specifically search for this particular hog, you wouldn't see it pop up in your search results. A well-kept secret I would say.

Welcome to our Blog! The first of many. I'll introduce you to the Royal Mangalitsa (our favorite subject), along with all the latest research being conducted on this animal.

Mangalitsa is a hardy, heritage breed from Hungary arriving in the U.S. around 2007. Every year this Hog is celebrated with its own festival in Budapest.

As you can see these hogs are hairy, with thick woolly hair, and they love to scratch on things, including you if you're standing too close.

They are docile creatures that live off the land. As they roam across the land eating roots, grubs, and acorns. They blissfully think, "Ain't life great!"

Their piglets are born either a blonde or swallow belly in color. And I know-their precious!

These hogs take 18 months before they are ready to be processed.

Most hogs today take maybe 9 months, and in many varieties, the fat has been been simply bred out; and if you lose the fat, you lose the flavor.

The Mangalitsa requires these extra months to build up that wonderful fat and red marbled meat. That's right. This pork is red and marbled. It might look like beef, but it's pork!

That melt in your mouth moment comes with your first taste.

The marbled areas melt (or should I say melts into the meat) giving it that savory flavor bite after bite.

Our small farm started with these two: Saltz and Peppa. Saltz is the blonde and Peppa is a swallow belly male. Hence the name: Salz & Peppa Pork! I know you saw that one coming.

My next blog will cover all the health benefits of this hog. This heritage breed is actually good for you.

The nutritional values for this animal, including its fat content, are amazing.

What a great week at our market store. Not that we made a lot of cash, but the folks I was able to speak with about our pork from the Royal Mangalitsa. It is a breath of fresh air when you talk to folks that realy understand what good safe food is all about.

I was blessed to meet a lady named Giovanna "Gia". She is a chef and restraunt owner who has cooked food all over the world. She knows knows and has worked with Michelin star chefs. She has great understanding for the Royal Mangalitsa breed of pork. It is prized around the world for its wonderfull fat lard. She was telling me how to season it and…

I have been asked how we take care of so many pigs at a time, and the simple answer is, i get a lot of help from my lovely wife Julie while I’m working my Fire Department gig.

We have around 75 with the new additions of piglets here on the farm. 30 something babies and 36 feeder pigs and our breeding stock. They all require something a little different, such as the diet, the environment and containment area and the feeders with foraging paddocks.

Our dogs play a major roll in this as well. They are Anatolian shepherd guardians. They will protect the pigs and are capable eliminating any threat that comes around. We can trust them to make…

I am very proud to let everyone know that Saltz and Peppa Pork Community Farms had a great Farrowing season this year. From March to May we have over 30 New arrivals that will be nurtured into the best tasting, and most nutritious pork all natural pork on the planet. Our timing on births last years was perfect. Now we are sure to feed them out this Fall on pumpkins and acorns. This will make our Mangalitsa pork have a very bold tase with nutty savor. It also creates the whitest fat. This is becoming a very large part of our pork business. Folks have learned that all natural pork fat that is rendered properly is better than butter. Th…

Thank you so much for all the information. You have done a great job with your research of this great animal. Their is still so much more to know. Educating the folks on this animal will not be so easy because of the nation wide campaign to turn the public away from naturally raised animals, especially pork. The lies that have been told to turn people to commercially grown, empty proteins have been told so long they have become true for the last generation. Saltz & Peppa Pork Community Farms will continually tell the truth and help guide folks back towards an all natural diet of Pork, chicken and home raised grass fed egg production from chickens and ducks.

God…
